Designed to complement—not replace—traditional phlebotomy, the device is single-use and sterile, aligning with infection control standards and designed to integrate seamlessly into existing laboratory workflows without modification. Clinical evaluation, conducted in collaboration with the University of Melbourne under ethical approval, demonstrated reduced blood loss, improved patient comfort, and confirmed that samples are suitable for accurate pathology analysis.
BleedingBlocks is progressing through the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) pathway, supported by evidence from early clinical trials and compliance processes that ensure patient safety and data integrity. These steps form the foundation for broader clinical adoption in hospitals, oncology clinics, paediatric wards, and community care settings.
How it works
Gentle Venipuncture
A standard butterfly needle is inserted with routine technique — requiring minimal training and no change to existing practice.
Passive Collection
Blood flows naturally into the capillary tubes through passive venous pressure and gravity — no suction involved, reducing strain on fragile veins.
Small-Volume, No Trauma
Only 2 mL is collected per draw, dramatically reducing patient trauma and the risk of anaemia.
Seamless Lab Integration
Samples are sealed and transported directly into existing lab workflows — no modifications or extra equipment needed.

Dr. Luke Sammartino is a Melbourne-based Paediatrician with over 20 years of experience caring for babies, toddlers, and young children. Trusted by thousands of families and healthcare professionals, he offers a complete range of Paediatric services including allergy testing, developmental checks, and behavioural assessments for ADHD and Autism.
Dr. Luke holds a Doctorate of Medicine focussed on Paediatric acute bronchiolitis, a common childhood respiratory illness. His research has been widely published and contributes to ongoing improvements in Paediatric care. He works closely with GPs, maternal child health nurses, and other specialists to ensure coordinated and compassionate care for every child.
As both a doctor and a father of four, Dr. Luke understands the challenges and joys of raising children—and is committed to helping families give their children the healthiest possible start in life.
